The ground under Ronkonkoma
Ronkonkoma sits right up against the moraine that shares its name. The older of Long Island’s two glacial ridges, running through the centre of the island. Lake Ronkonkoma itself is a kettle lake, a hollow left where a buried block of ice melted out of the glacial deposit.
That means moraine till underfoot rather than the sorted sand of the outwash plain a mile or two south: denser, less predictable, and it holds water where outwash sheds it. Two properties on the same street can sit on noticeably different material, so we test rather than assume.
For a patio, moraine till is the harder ground. It holds water rather than releasing it, and water held under paving through a freeze-thaw winter lifts it. Frost heave shows up as a patio that’s proud in one area each spring and settles back in summer. The answer is an open-graded base with a genuine route out for the water, not a deeper one that holds more.
How we do the work
Excavate. Subgrade cut to depth, checked and compacted before anything goes back in.
Base. Aggregate placed and compacted in lifts. Open-graded or dense-graded depending on the site and how water needs to move through it.
Bedding. Screeded to a consistent thickness. This is a setting layer, not a levelling layer : using thick bedding to correct a poor base is the shortcut that always shows within a year.
Lay to pattern. Cut cleanly at the edges and around obstructions rather than gapped and filled with mortar.
Edge restraint. Fixed into the base around the full perimeter. This is what makes interlocking pavers interlock. Without it the outer courses walk outward under load and frost, the joints open across the whole field, and the patio comes apart from the edges in.
Joint sand. Polymeric, swept, vibrated and set. Then a final compaction pass.
What moves the price in Ronkonkoma
Variability is the Ronkonkoma factor: the ground genuinely differs property to property near the moraine, and the base build changes with it. The other is layout: a lot of Ronkonkoma is commuter housing around the LIRR station, with shorter, narrower driveways often carrying more vehicles than they were laid out for. Widening and apron work come up here more than anywhere else we cover.
Local rules
Ronkonkoma is in the Town of Islip. Widening a driveway or altering the apron is more likely to need permission than replacing on the existing footprint, and widening is a common job here, so it comes up more than elsewhere.
Note: the hamlet of Ronkonkoma is Town of Islip. Lake Ronkonkoma, the neighbouring hamlet, is mainly Brookhaven with a corner in Smithtown. The two get confused constantly.

How long does a patio take?
Most residential patios are three to five days on site. The majority of that is excavation and base: laying the pavers is the quick part and the part that looks like progress.
Will it settle?
A properly based and compacted patio shouldn’t. Minor movement at the very edges over years is normal and correctable. Dishing in the middle is base failure, not settling.
Can you widen my driveway?
Usually. The two things to check first are whether there’s room within your property line and whether widening needs permission from the Town of Islip. We’ll look at both before quoting.
