The ground under Huntington
Huntington is north shore, and it is the furthest we go from the Medford yard in that direction. The ground here is glacial moraine: till, unsorted and dense, holding water rather than shedding it.
If you have lived somewhere south of the ridge and moved up here, the difference is real. In Medford or Islip, the enemy is settlement: loose sand consolidating under an under-compacted base. In Huntington the enemy is water. It sits in the ground, freezes over winter, expands, and lifts whatever is on top of it.
Frost heave is the north-shore failure mode, and the tell is a crack that reappears in the same place every spring however often it’s been patched. Patching addresses the crack. It does nothing about the water that caused it.
The answer is drainage: free-draining base material with a genuine route out for the water, rather than a nicely graded basin holding it under your driveway. It is the difference between a driveway that lasts and one you patch annually, and it is invisible once the job is finished, which is exactly why it is the thing to ask about when you compare quotes.
Add slope to that, and runoff becomes a design question in its own right. Water crossing a Huntington property finds the low point. If that is your garage, your foundation or the neighbour’s boundary, it needs resolving on paper before anything is laid.
Slope, walls and level space
Huntington’s sloping sites mean a lot of the work here is about creating level ground rather than surfacing it. Driveways cut into a bank need the bank held. A back yard that falls away is only usable once there is a wall and a platform. Steps connect what the grade separates.

A wall without those looks perfect for three years and then leans, and a leaning wall comes down rather than gets straightened.

Why does my driveway crack in the same place every spring?
Frost heave. Water held in the ground under the surface freezes and lifts it. More asphalt on top won’t stop it: drainage underneath will.
My retaining wall is leaning. Can it be pushed back?
No. It has failed, almost certainly because water built up behind it. It has to come down and be rebuilt with proper drainage.
