The ground under Huntington
Huntington is north shore, and the furthest west we work. The ground is glacial moraine: till, unsorted and dense, holding water rather than shedding it. If you’ve moved up here from south of the ridge, the difference is real: down there the enemy is settlement into loose sand, up here it’s water.
For a driveway, till is the frost-heave ground. Water held underneath freezes, expands, and lifts the surface, and the give-away is a crack that reappears in exactly the same place every spring however many times it’s patched. Patching addresses the crack and does nothing about the water. Drainage under the surface is what fixes it.
How we do the work
Excavation. Old surface out, subgrade cut to depth. If the existing driveway is coming up, it comes up: we don’t lay new asphalt over failed material to save a day.
Base. Compacted aggregate, placed and compacted in lifts rather than dumped to depth and rolled once. Depth is set by what the driveway carries; a car-only residential drive and one that takes a truck are not the same specification.
Asphalt. Either a single course or a binder-and-top-course build depending on the job. The binder carries the load, the top course gives the finish and sheds water. Rolled while hot: asphalt that cools before compaction never reaches density and ravels at the edges within a couple of seasons.
Pitch and edges. Water leaves the driveway, and it leaves it somewhere sensible rather than into the garage or across the neighbour’s line. Edges get a proper shoulder so the asphalt isn’t sitting on air.
What moves the price in Huntington
Slope and distance both matter here. Sloping sites mean retaining work and level platforms before any surface can exist, which puts more of the cost into excavation and structure. And Huntington is the western end of our range, so we block-schedule work here rather than running single jobs. About 48 hours in warm weather, longer if it’s cool. It carries on curing over the following few months, so avoid sharp turning with the wheels stationary and don’t put a trailer jack or bike stand on it without a pad.
