Asphalt Driveway Paving in Medford, NY
New installs, full replacements and resurfacing: excavated to depth, based properly, and compacted in lifts rather than rolled once and called finished.
The ground under a Medford driveway
Medford sits on the outwash plain just south of the Ronkonkoma moraine. That means sand and gravel: free-draining, which is genuinely good news, and loose, which is the part that catches people out.
Free-draining subgrade is why Medford driveways rarely fail from trapped water the way north-shore ones can. But sand doesn’t hold shape on its own. If the base isn’t compacted in proper lifts, it keeps consolidating under traffic for years after the job looks finished, and you get the classic Medford failure: a driveway that’s still intact but has quietly dished where the cars park.
That’s a base problem, not a surface problem, and no amount of sealcoating touches it.
What we build
Excavation. Old surface out, subgrade cut to depth. If the existing driveway is coming up, it comes up: we don’t lay new asphalt over failed material to save a day.
Base. Compacted aggregate, placed and compacted in lifts rather than dumped to depth and rolled once. Depth is set by what the driveway carries: a car-only residential drive and one that takes a truck are not the same specification.
Asphalt. Either a single course or a binder-and-top-course build depending on the job. The binder layer carries the load; the top course gives the finish and sheds water. Rolled while hot: asphalt that cools before compaction never reaches density and will ravel at the edges within a couple of seasons.
Pitch and edges. Water leaves the driveway, and it leaves it somewhere sensible rather than into the garage or across the neighbour’s line. Edges get a proper shoulder so the asphalt isn’t sitting on air.
Resurfacing or replacement?
This is the decision worth getting right, because one costs a fraction of the other and choosing wrong wastes the whole spend.
An overlay works when the surface is cracked and tired but the base is sound and the driveway is still holding its shape. You get a new 1.5–2 inch course over the old one, and it buys years.
Replacement is the honest answer when the driveway has sunk, when cracks are wide and the edges are crumbling into the shoulder, when there are potholes rather than surface cracks, or when water pools after rain. All four are symptoms of base failure, and an overlay on a failed base fails in the same places within two winters.
We’ll tell you which you’ve got before we quote. Anyone who quotes an overlay without looking at how the driveway is sitting is quoting the cheaper job to win the work.
After it's laid
Driving on it. Walk on it the same day. Keep vehicles off for about 48 hours in warm weather, longer if it’s cool.
The first summer. New asphalt stays soft for a few months while it cures. Avoid sharp turning with the wheels stationary, don’t park a trailer jack or a motorcycle stand on it without a pad, and expect tyre marks in a heatwave. They’re cosmetic.
Sealcoating. Not immediately. New asphalt needs to cure before it’s sealed, and a contractor who wants to seal your brand-new driveway is selling you something. After that, sealing on a sensible cycle protects the binder, but over-sealing builds up a brittle skin that cracks on its own. Less often than the flyers suggest.
Edges. The most vulnerable part of any driveway. Don’t run wheels over the shoulder, and keep soil and turf built up to the edge so it’s supported.
Why this crew
If something needs looking at after the job, we look at it. The person who quoted the driveway is on the crew that lays it. And the quote states the base depth: if it doesn’t, on any estimate you get from anyone, ask why.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a Medford driveway take?
Most residential driveways are one to two days on site: excavation and base on day one, paving on day two. Larger or awkward-access properties run longer, and we’ll say so at the estimate rather than on the morning of day three.
When can I park on it?
About 48 hours in warm weather. Longer if it’s cool. It’ll be fully cured over the following few months.
What does it cost?
It depends on the area, the access, and whether the old surface comes out. The estimate is free and on site, which is the only way to give you a figure for your property rather than a range that fits everyone. Book one and we will price it in front of you, or call (631) 245-9273 to talk it through first.
Can you pave in winter?
Asphalt needs warmth to compact to density, so the practical season runs spring through late autumn. We’ll quote in winter and book you for the front of the season: spring fills up first.
