Medford sits on the outwash plain, just south of the Ronkonkoma Moraine that runs through the centre of the island. The hamlet is flat, about 89 feet above sea level, no significant grade change across most of it, and the land was Central Pine Barrens before the railroad came through in 1843 and the post-war subdivisions followed.
