Also called tar and chip. Hot liquid asphalt sprayed onto a prepared base, stone chip spread into it, and the whole thing rolled so the aggregate embeds. The result is a textured, matte-finish surface with the stone colour showing through.
What it is, and what it isn't
Chip seal gets misunderstood in both directions, so let’s be plain about it.
It is not a cheap version of asphalt. It’s a different product with a different look, a different maintenance cycle and a different set of jobs it’s good at. Choosing it purely to save money on a driveway that wants asphalt is a decision you’ll regret in five years.
It is not a repair for a failed base. Chip seal is a surface treatment. Sprayed over a driveway that’s sunk or cracking from below, it will crack in exactly the same places within a season or two. If your base has failed, the base has to be fixed. Anyone offering to chip seal over a broken driveway is selling you eighteen months.
It is genuinely good on long rural drives, on properties where a smooth black surface would look wrong, and where you want texture and grip rather than a formal finish. It suits older houses and larger lots better than it suits a suburban front driveway.

The line that matters is the last one. Both need a properly excavated, compacted base. The surface choice comes after that decision, not instead of it.
Living with a chip seal driveway
Loose stone at first. Some chip that didn’t embed will come free over the first few weeks. It sweeps up and it settles down. Expect it rather than being surprised by it.
Snow ploughing. A blade set hard down can catch the surface. Ploughing with the blade slightly raised, or with shoes fitted, avoids it. Worth mentioning to whoever clears your drive.
Recoating. Chip seal is renewed by recoating rather than resurfacing, on a longer cycle than asphalt sealcoating. It’s a straightforward job and it restores the finish.
Edges. Like any flexible surface, the edges are the weak point. Keep them supported.
Is it right for your Medford property?

How long does chip seal last?
It depends on the traffic it takes, what is underneath it, and whether it gets recoated when it is due. Chip seal is renewed by recoating rather than overlaid, so it runs on a shorter cycle than asphalt, and a maintained surface long outlasts a neglected one. Can I put chip seal over my existing asphalt driveway?
Only if the existing surface and base are sound. Over a cracked or sunken driveway it will mirror the failure. We’ll look before we answer.
Is it dusty?
No. The stone is embedded in hot asphalt, not loose over a base. That’s a different product (a gravel drive). There’ll be some loose chip in the first weeks and then it’s a solid surface.
Can you plough it?
Yes, with the blade slightly raised or with shoes on. A blade dragged hard across it will pick at the surface.
What colours are available?
It depends on the stone. Different aggregates give quite different finishes and it’s worth seeing samples rather than choosing from a screen. We’ll bring them.
