For a patio, free-draining sand is the easy version: water leaves the base instead of sitting in it, and the hydrostatic problems that plague north-shore patios largely don’t arise. What sand won’t forgive is compaction. It consolidates quietly under load, so an under-compacted base looks flawless on handover day and dishes in its second summer.
How we do the work
Excavate. Subgrade cut to depth, checked and compacted before anything goes back in.
Base. Aggregate placed and compacted in lifts. Open-graded or dense-graded depending on the site and how water needs to move through it.
Bedding. Screeded to a consistent thickness. This is a setting layer, not a levelling layer : using thick bedding to correct a poor base is the shortcut that always shows within a year.
Lay to pattern. Cut cleanly at the edges and around obstructions rather than gapped and filled with mortar.
Edge restraint. Fixed into the base around the full perimeter. This is what makes interlocking pavers interlock. Without it the outer courses walk outward under load and frost, the joints open across the whole field, and the patio comes apart from the edges in.
Joint sand. Polymeric, swept, vibrated and set. Then a final compaction pass.
What moves the price in Sayville
Two things move the price in Sayville. Proximity to water: on properties toward the bay or either creek there’s less excavation depth available before you hit wet ground, and that changes the build. Property age: Sayville has older housing stock around Main Street, and older properties tend to mean matching work rather than standard specification, which takes longer.

How long does a patio take?
Most residential patios are three to five days on site. The majority of that is excavation and base: laying the pavers is the quick part and the part that looks like progress.
Will it settle?
A properly based and compacted patio shouldn’t. Minor movement at the very edges over years is normal and correctable. Dishing in the middle is base failure, not settling.
I’m close to the bay. Does that change anything?
It can. A higher water table means less excavation depth before you hit wet ground, and a base sitting in water won’t hold compaction. We check on site and design around it.
