The ground under Patchogue

Patchogue is flat, and there’s a reason for it: the village sits on the outwash plain south of Long Island’s glacial moraines. The sand and gravel washed out from the melting ice sheet laid down level, and it stayed level.

For paving, flat ground is the easy version. No slope to design around, no retaining walls needed just to make a yard usable, and drainage that’s about moving water away from the house rather than managing it downhill.

The complication in Patchogue is water from the other direction. The village sits on Patchogue Bay, part of the Great South Bay, and the closer a property is to the water the higher the water table sits. On low-lying streets that changes the excavation. There’s less depth available before you hit wet ground, and a base that sits in water doesn’t stay compacted.

Where that applies we’ll say so at the estimate and design the build around it. On most Patchogue properties it doesn’t, and the free-draining outwash sand is straightforwardly good ground to work on: provided the base gets compacted in lifts rather than dumped and rolled.

Village lots and apron work

Patchogue is dense. It’s one of the most urbanised places we work: a proper downtown, small lots, houses close to the street.

Two consequences for the work.

Access. Getting a machine and a truck to the back of a Patchogue property is often the hardest part of the job. Narrow side returns, close neighbours, and street parking to work around. We’ll walk the access route at the estimate, because it genuinely affects the price and it’s better known in advance than discovered on the morning.

Apron work. Short driveways meeting the street directly means the apron, the section where your driveway meets the public road, takes disproportionate wear. It’s the first part to fail on most village driveways.

Frequently asked questions

Can you get equipment to my back yard?
Usually, and where we can’t there are ways around it: smaller plant, or moving material by hand at a cost we’ll show you rather than absorb into a vague number. We’ll assess it on site.

My driveway apron is breaking up but the rest is fine. Can you just do that?
Often, yes. Aprons take the most punishment on a village driveway. Whether it can be done in isolation depends on how the failure is progressing.
