Chimney Repair
Chimney Masonry Repair in Holbrook, NY
Repointing, crown repair, flashing and full rebuilds across Holbrook. This is the masonry side of a chimney: the brick, the mortar and the waterproofing.
What we don’t do: flue sweeping, lining, relining, or appliance work. That’s a different trade with a different certification. If your problem is inside the flue we’ll tell you and point you elsewhere rather than take the job.
The ground under Holbrook
Holbrook sits on the outwash plain below the Ronkonkoma Moraine: sand and gravel, free-draining, straightforward to excavate. It stiffens as you go north toward the moraine, so it’s worth a test pit rather than an assumption on properties at that end.
Ground type matters less for chimney work than for anything else on this list, because the problem is above the roof rather than below the ground. What does apply everywhere on Long Island is the freeze-thaw cycle: water gets into masonry, freezes, and pushes the face off. Catching a failed crown early is the cheapest intervention available.
How we do the work
Every common chimney fault traces back to water getting into masonry and freezing.
Failed crown. The concrete cap on top. Thin, flat crowns crack early, and water then runs straight down inside the brickwork. The most common cause of chimney deterioration, and the cheapest thing to fix if it’s caught.
Open mortar joints. Mortar is sacrificial. It’s meant to wear before the brick does. Once joints are recessed, soft or missing, water gets behind the face.
Spalling brick. Faces popping off. Water that got in, froze, and pushed the face away. Spalled brick can’t be repaired; it gets cut out and replaced.
Failed flashing. Where the chimney meets the roof. Shows up as a ceiling stain, so it often gets diagnosed as a roof leak.
What we do: cut out joints to depth and repoint with mortar matched to the existing masonry; rebuild crowns with a proper overhang and drip edge; replace spalled units; re-flash at the roof line; and where appropriate apply a breathable masonry sealer: a film-forming sealer traps moisture inside the brick and accelerates the damage it’s meant to prevent.
What moves the price in Holbrook
Age of the housing is the Holbrook factor. A lot of the hamlet went up in the post-war subdivision boom, which means a very high proportion of original surfaces are now decades past their design life. More of our Holbrook work is replacement and resurfacing than new installation, and the honest question is usually which of the two a property actually needs, because one costs a fraction of the other.
Local rules
Holbrook is split. Most of the hamlet is in the Town of Islip; the section between Portion Road and the Long Island Rail Road tracks is in the Town of Brookhaven. Two municipalities, two sets of rules, and the line runs through the middle of the hamlet. We work out which applies to your address before quoting.
What we’ll do regardless: tell you what applies before you sign, not after we’ve started.
Why this crew
The person who quotes the job is on the crew that runs it, and the quote states the base depth, which is the line worth comparing across any estimates you’re holding.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if it’s the chimney or the roof?
Often you can’t tell from inside, because failed flashing and a failed crown produce the same ceiling stain. That’s why we look at it rather than diagnose it over the phone.
Will the new mortar match?
New mortar is always brighter than sixty-year-old mortar and weathers in over a season or two. We can tint to get closer, and on a partial repoint that’s usually worth doing.
Is my Holbrook property in Islip or Brookhaven?
Most of Holbrook is Town of Islip. If you’re between Portion Road and the LIRR tracks, you’re in Town of Brookhaven. We’ll confirm for your address at the estimate.
