The ground under Ronkonkoma
Ronkonkoma sits right up against the moraine that shares its name. The older of Long Island’s two glacial ridges, running through the centre of the island. Lake Ronkonkoma itself is a kettle lake, a hollow left where a buried block of ice melted out of the glacial deposit.
That means moraine till underfoot rather than the sorted sand of the outwash plain a mile or two south: denser, less predictable, and it holds water where outwash sheds it. Two properties on the same street can sit on noticeably different material, so we test rather than assume.
For a walkway, the frost issue is the one to design against. Till holds water, water freezes, and a path lifts unevenly: most visibly at the edges, where the restraint then gets pushed out and the field starts to spread. Drainage under the path and a properly pinned edge restraint are what keep it flat.
How we do the work
Walkways fail for three reasons, and all three happen below the pavers.
No edge restraint, or the wrong kind. A paver field only interlocks if something holds the perimeter. Without a restraint pinned into the base, the outer courses migrate outward under foot traffic and frost. Once a path has spread there’s no tightening it back up.
Base too shallow, or compacted in one go. Aggregate goes down in lifts and gets compacted at each one. Full depth dumped and rolled once looks identical on the day and settles unevenly within a year.
No pitch. A path that doesn’t shed water holds it in the joints, which washes out joint sand and works the pavers loose.
So: excavate and compact the subgrade, base in lifts, screeded bedding, pavers laid to pattern and cut cleanly, edge restraint fixed into the base, polymeric joint sand vibrated and set.
On pattern: herringbone gives the strongest interlock because no joint line runs continuously in the direction of traffic. If the walkway takes any vehicle load, that’s the one.
What moves the price in Ronkonkoma
Variability is the Ronkonkoma factor: the ground genuinely differs property to property near the moraine, and the base build changes with it. The other is layout: a lot of Ronkonkoma is commuter housing around the LIRR station, with shorter, narrower driveways often carrying more vehicles than they were laid out for. Widening and apron work come up here more than anywhere else we cover.
Local rules
Ronkonkoma is in the Town of Islip. Widening a driveway or altering the apron is more likely to need permission than replacing on the existing footprint, and widening is a common job here, so it comes up more than elsewhere.
Note: the hamlet of Ronkonkoma is Town of Islip. Lake Ronkonkoma, the neighbouring hamlet, is mainly Brookhaven with a corner in Smithtown. The two get confused constantly.

Frequently asked questions
Will weeds grow through the joints?
Polymeric sand suppresses most of it. Seed blown in from above will still germinate in the joint surface occasionally. That’s surface growth rather than something coming up from below, and it brushes out.
Do pavers get slippery?
Textured concrete pavers grip well wet. Smooth natural stone can be slick, especially in shade where algae builds up: worth raising at the estimate if the path is on the north side of the house or under trees.
Can you widen my driveway?
Usually. The two things to check first are whether there’s room within your property line and whether widening needs permission from the Town of Islip. We’ll look at both before quoting.
