Why pavers, rather than a poured surface

They flex. A paver field is a flexible surface: individual units move microscopically against each other, so ground movement is absorbed by the joints rather than cracking the surface. In a freeze-thaw climate on ground that heaves, that flexibility is the entire argument.

They repair. A damaged, stained or cracked unit lifts out and gets replaced in minutes. If you kept spares from the original batch, the repair is invisible. There is no equivalent for poured concrete, where a patch shows forever.

They come apart and go back. Need to run a utility under a paved area in five years? Lift the pavers, dig, backfill, relay. Nobody breaks out a paver driveway to reach a pipe.

They last. Properly based and edged, decades.

ICPI, and what it actually certifies

We’re ICPI certified: the Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute runs the trade’s installer certification for segmental paving.

It’s worth knowing what it examines, because it’s not decorative: subgrade preparation, base and bedding, compaction sequence, jointing, and edge restraint. In other words, precisely the list of things that decide whether paving is flat in fifteen years and precisely the list you cannot inspect once the job is done.

Nobody sits that exam by accident. It doesn’t guarantee a good job; it means someone invested in learning the method rather than picking it up.

We’re also Techo-Bloc Pro, which matters for warranty: manufacturer material warranties on paver systems are conditional on how the product was installed.

Edge restraint is the whole system

If you take one thing from this page.

Interlocking pavers only interlock because the perimeter is held. Remove the restraint and the outer course has nothing resisting it: foot traffic, vehicle load and frost push it outward, fractionally, over and over. The second course follows. Joints open across the entire field, joint sand washes out, units start rocking.

There is no repair. A paved area that has spread gets lifted and relaid. Not tightened, not re-sanded: lifted.

Proper restraint is a purpose-made edging pinned into the compacted base around the full perimeter. It’s a small line on a quote and it’s worth confirming it’s there.

Pattern, and where it matters

Herringbone gives the strongest interlock, because no joint line runs continuously in the direction of traffic. Anywhere a vehicle goes, driveways, aprons, parking areas, this is the pattern.

Running bond is simpler, produces less waste, and suits narrow paths.

Basketweave and stack bond are more decorative and interlock least. Fine on a garden path, wrong under a car.

Where each application differs

Paver driveways carry vehicle load, so the base is deeper, the paver thicker and the pattern herringbone. More expensive than asphalt up front, and the only driveway surface where a damaged section can be repaired invisibly. Compare with asphalt →

Paver patios are pedestrian load, so the base is lighter, but the pitch and the transitions matter more because you’re looking at it closely every day. Patios →

Walkways live or die on edge restraint, because they’re narrow and the perimeter is a large proportion of the whole. Walkways →

Pool surrounds add slip resistance and drainage to the list. Textured concrete paver grips well wet; smooth natural stone can be slick.

The ground decides the base

South of the glacial moraines, Medford, Holbrook, Patchogue, Sayville, Islip, free-draining outwash sand. Compaction discipline is what matters.

On the moraine, Huntington, Commack, Setauket, Port Jefferson, Miller Place, Ronkonkoma, unsorted till that holds water. Drainage through the base is what matters.

Hampton Bays adds salt, which attacks the metal fixings in edge restraint. Specify for it.

Frequently asked questions

Are pavers more expensive than asphalt or concrete? Up front, yes. Over a long life with invisible repairs and no resurfacing, the comparison narrows considerably.

Will weeds grow through? Polymeric joint sand suppresses most of it. Seed blown in from above germinates in the joint surface occasionally: surface growth, not something coming up from below, and it brushes out.

What’s the white bloom on new pavers? Efflorescence. Lime working out of the cement. Normal, not a defect, weathers off.

Can pavers take a car? Yes, with the right base depth, paver thickness and a herringbone pattern. Not with a patio specification.

What does it cost? It comes down to the area, the paver, and the condition of what is already there. We quote on site and the estimate is free, so you get a figure for your property rather than a national average. Book one, or call (631) 245-9273 if you want to talk it through first.
