Suffolk County is not one kind of ground
This is the thing that separates a county-wide paving contractor who knows the island from one who pours the same detail everywhere.
Two glacial moraines run along Long Island’s spine: the Harbor Hill along the north shore and the older Ronkonkoma through the centre. South of them lies the outwash plain: sand and gravel washed out from the melting ice sheet, laid down flat and free-draining.
On the outwash plain, across Medford, Holbrook, Patchogue, Sayville and Islip, driveways fail by settling. The sand drains beautifully and holds shape badly, so an under-compacted base consolidates quietly under vehicle load. It looks perfect on handover and dishes where the cars park by year two.
On the moraine, across Huntington, Commack, Setauket, Port Jefferson, Miller Place and Ronkonkoma, driveways fail by heaving. Till holds water rather than shedding it, the water freezes, and it lifts the surface. The signature is a crack that reappears in exactly the same place every spring however many times it’s patched.
On the coast, across Hampton Bays, you get free-draining sand plus a high water table near the water and salt in the air.
Same county, three different specifications. A crew that quotes Huntington the way it quotes Islip is going to be wrong in one of them.
What we do
Asphalt driveway paving: new installs, full replacements and resurfacing. Excavated to depth, based in compacted lifts, rolled hot.
Oil and stone chip seal: hot asphalt sprayed and stone chip rolled in. Suits long drives and older properties where a smooth black surface would look wrong. Not a cheap version of asphalt and not a fix for a failed base.
Interlocking paver driveways and walkways, where the finish matters more than the cost per square foot.
Aprons and widening: the section where your driveway meets the road takes the most abuse on any residential drive and fails first. Often the only part that needs doing.
What goes on our quote
Every estimate states the excavation depth, the base material and its compacted depth, the asphalt specification, the pitch and where the water goes, disposal, and what’s excluded.
We put that in writing for a straightforward reason: it’s the only genuinely comparable number across three quotes. If you’re holding estimates from us and two other companies, line up the base depths first. If two say one figure and one says half of it, you are not comparing three prices for the same job. You’re comparing two jobs and a cheaper thing.
A quote that’s a square-foot rate and nothing else is hiding where the corners get cut, and the corners are always underground.
Resurfacing or replacement
The single most valuable thing we do at an estimate is tell you which of these you actually need, because one costs a fraction of the other.
An overlay works when the surface is cracked and tired but the driveway is still holding its shape and the base is sound.
Replacement is the honest answer when it has sunk, when there are potholes rather than surface cracks, when the edges are crumbling into the shoulder, or when water pools after rain. All four are base failure, and an overlay on a failed base fails in the same places within two winters.
We will tell you when your driveway has another five years in it. It costs us a job today and it’s why people call us back.

We quote at the property, with a tape measure. Nobody prices a driveway off satellite imagery, and you should be wary of anyone who offers to.
Frequently asked questions
What does a driveway cost in Suffolk County? What a driveway costs depends on size, access and what’s underneath the existing surface. We’ve broken down what moves the price on our driveway paving cost page.
When is the paving season on Long Island? Asphalt needs the ground and air warm enough to compact to density, so the practical window runs spring through late autumn. Spring books out first: for May work, call in February.
How long does a driveway take? Most residential driveways are one to two days: excavation and base on day one, paving on day two.
