What’s the same everywhere on Long Island
Wherever you are on the island, these hold.
The base is the driveway. The asphalt on top is a wearing surface. The compacted aggregate underneath is what carries the load. Every quote you get should state the excavation depth and the compacted base depth, and if two quotes differ on that, you’re not comparing the same job.
Compaction happens in lifts. Aggregate placed at full depth and rolled once is dense at the top and loose underneath. It looks identical on the day and consolidates unevenly over two years.
The season is real. Asphalt has to be compacted while hot, which is why the paving window runs spring through late autumn. Spring books out first everywhere.
Nobody has leftover asphalt. Hot mix has a working window measured in hours. If someone knocks on your door offering to pave your driveway with surplus material, the story is impossible. More on that →
What changes across the island
Long Island’s geology runs in bands, and it changes what your driveway needs.
Two glacial moraines form the island’s spine: the Harbor Hill along the north shore and the older Ronkonkoma through the centre. South of both lies the outwash plain, sand and gravel washed out from the melting ice.
On the outwash plain, the south shore and central Suffolk, the ground is free-draining and loose. Driveways fail by settling into an under-compacted base. You’ll see it as a dished area where the cars park.
On the moraine, the north shore and the central ridge, the ground is unsorted till that holds water. Driveways fail by frost heave. You’ll see it as a crack that reappears in exactly the same place every spring, however many times it’s patched.
On the coast, the east end and the barrier-beach side, free-draining sand plus a high water table near the water and salt in the air.
Ask any contractor you’re considering which of those they think you’re on and what they’re doing about it. A good answer is specific. A blank one tells you they pour the same detail everywhere.
