The ground under Miller Place
Miller Place is north shore, sitting on the east side of Mount Sinai Harbor with a two-mile stretch of beach. The ground is glacial moraine, till rather than the sorted outwash sand found south of the ridge, and the land is hilly in patches, most noticeably as you get closer to the water.
Moraine till is denser and holds water where outwash sheds it, and that changes what fails and why.
Down south, in Medford or Islip, a driveway fails by settling into loose sand. Here it fails by heaving. The fix is not more asphalt. It’s getting the water out from under the surface: free-draining base material with a route out, rather than a well-graded reservoir sitting under your driveway.
Where the ground slopes, runoff becomes part of the design too: water moving across a site finds the lowest point, and if that’s your garage threshold or the neighbour’s boundary, that needs solving on paper before anything is laid.
Slope work
Hilly ground means more of the work here is about making level space than covering it.
A yard that falls away is only usable in strips. A retaining wall and a platform turn it into somewhere you can put a table. Steps connect what the slope separates. Driveways cut into a bank need the bank held.
